THIS DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE BRISTOL SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT GUIDE (BSAG) IS GIVEN AS PART OF AN OVERALL REPORT OF A JUVENILE DELINQUENCY STUDY.
Abstract
THIS IS ONE PART OF A MULTIPART REPORT ON A 7-YEAR LONGITUDINAL STUDY TO ATTEMPT TO PREDICT DELINQUENT BEHAVIOR. TO GATHER THE SAMPLE OF MORE THAN 5000 BOYS BORN IN 1957 ATTENDING A NEW ZEALAND STATE SCHOOL IN 1967, THE BRISTOL SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT TEST WAS ADMINISTERED TO MORE THAN 25,000 PUBLIC SCHOOL BOYS. BECAUSE SUCH A LARGE NUMBER OF TESTS WAS AVAILABLE FOR ANALYSIS, IT WAS DECIDED TO MEASURE NEW ZEALAND NORMS DEFINED IN THE 1963 VERSION OF THE TEST WITH DATA GATHERED IN THIS STUDY. THE BSAG ATTEMPTS TO GROUP BEHAVIOR PATTERNS INTO DEVIANT OR MALADJUSTMENT 'SYNDROMES.' THIS STUDY FOCUSES ON THE FACTORIAL STRUCTURE OF THE TEST SYNDROMES AND ATTEMPTS TO REGROUP TEST CONTENT TO PRODUCE MORE COHERENT MEASUREMENTS OF ADJUSTMENT. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE 1963 TEST IS LOADED TO PRODUCE CERTAIN CHARACTERISTICS. FACTOR ANALYSIS IS USED TO REDUCE THE 257 ITEMS IN THE ORIGINAL TEST AND OBTAIN A BALANCED TEST MEASURE FOR SEVEN SYNDROMES. APPENDIXES GIVE THE BASIC TEST, ACCOMPANYING PERSONAL DATA SHEETS, CONTROLS USED FOR CONFIDENTIALITY IN THIS STUDY, AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY. (GLR)
