THIS BOOK IS THE TEACHER'S MANUAL FOR THE STREET LAW COURSE TAUGHT IN TWO WASHINGTON, D.C., HIGH SCHOOLS.
Abstract
IT HAS SINCE EXPANDED TO A FULL YEAR COURSE IN ALL 16 CITY HIGH SCHOOLS AND SEVEN DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PRISONS AND JUVENILE INSTITUTIONS. STREET LAW'S CHIEF PURPOSE IS TO GIVE THOSE WHO STUDY IT SOME KNOWLEDGE OF LAW THAT CAN BE OF PRACTICAL USE TO THEM IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES (ON THE STREET). THIS TEXT ACCOMPANIES 'STREET LAW: A COURSE IN THE LAW OF CORRECTIONS,' NCJ-42153, WHICH WAS WRITTEN TO MEET A RECOGNIZED INTEREST AND DEMAND FOR EDUCATION OF LAYPERSONS IN THE LAW OF SENTENCING AND CORRECTIONS. THE STUDENT TEXT FOCUSES ON ISSUES OF IMMEDIATE CONCERN TO INMATES AND ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL. THE COURSE ITSELF EMBODIES PRIMARILY A PROBLEM INQUIRY APPROACH TO SENTENCING, APPEALS, PROBATION, HABEAS CORPUS, AND SUBSTANTIVE AND DUE PROCESS RIGHTS IN PRISON AND ON PAROLE. THIS TEACHER'S MANUAL DISCUSSES PROBLEMS POSED IN THE STUDENT TEXT AND ALSO CONTAINS A BIBLIOGRAPHY, A LIST OF AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS, AND A MOCK TRIAL ON PRISONERS' MAIL RIGHTS. FOR RELATED DOCUMENTS, SEE NCJ-42155 AND 42156. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...ELW
