This book examines the growth of street gangs throughout the world.
Abstract
Chapter 1 introduces the topic of the world's street gangs; it addresses topics on the various definitions of gangs and youth subcultures, presents methodological issues concerning the measurement of street gang activity, examines how world demographic changes will promote more street gangs, and how social conditions of the world influence gangs. Chapter 2 reviews basic research on street gangs in the United States. Chapter 3 covers street gangs in Europe. Chapter 4 covers street gangs in the Western Hemisphere excluding the United States. Chapter 5 describes street gangs in Russia and eastern European countries. Chapter 6 covers examples of gangs in Asian countries, including India, China, Hong Kong (postreunification), and Japan. Chapter 7 covers the continents of Africa and Australia, and island countries in the Pacific Ocean. Chapter 8 summarizes the main findings presented in the previous chapters, compares information about street gangs throughout the world, covers trend and patterns for street gangs, and projects future trends for street gangs throughout the world.
