FOUR ARTICLES CONCERNED WITH ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION MECHANISMS ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY DESCRIBES LEGISLATION (DISPUTE RESOLUTION ACT, S. 957, 95TH CONGRESS, 1ST SESSION, 1977) THAT WOULD CREATE A DISPUTE RESOLUTION RESOURCE CENTER IN THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AND PROVIDE FOR FEDERAL SUPPORT OF STATE AND LOCAL EFFORTS TO DEVELOP DISPUTE RESOLUTION MECHANISMS. AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO SETTLING 'LARGE CASE' LITIGATION IS ILLUSTRATED IN AN ARTICLE DESCRIBING A NONBINDING 'MINITRIAL' USED TO SETTLE A MAJOR PATENT INFRINGEMENT SUIT INVOLVING TWO CALIFORNIA CORPORATIONS. TOP CORPORATE MANAGERS AND A PRIVATELY HIRED NEUTRAL ADVISOR (A FORMER FEDERAL TRIAL COURT JUDGE) PRESIDED OVER THE MINITRIAL. MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN ANTITRUST LITIGATION ARE OUTLINED IN AN ARTICLE SUGGESTING PROCEDURAL REFORMS THAT COULD EXPEDITE THE HANDLING OF LARGE, COMPLEX ANTITRUST CASES. THE FOURTH ARTICLE DESCRIBES LOS ANGELES COUNTY'S LANDLORD-TENANT COURT. SEE NCJ-55637-55370 FOR ABSTRACTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL ARTICLES.
