This "Practice Guide" provides an overview of the range of alcohol and other drug treatment services provided in juvenile justice settings, highlighting approaches that have shown promise of producing positive outcomes, with attention to integrating services across the substance abuse and juvenile justice systems.
Abstract
The guide is not intended as a detailed set of instructions for uniform practice in the provision of alcohol and other drug treatment services for juveniles. When possible, the guide provides examples of programs developed in various settings and in different parts of the country. The first section provides background information and an overall context and rationale for the Practice Guide, followed by a section that presents an overview of effective treatment practices, focusing on the clinical aspects of treatment. The third section highlights the structural supports for effective treatment, addressing topics such as collaboration, strategic planning, program administration, and evaluation. Section 4 contains program descriptions and contact information for projects funded by the Federal Center for Substance Abuse treatment (CSAT) as well as other programs that have used and developed some of the strategies described in this guide. Section 5 provides extensive references and resources, including training resources, evaluation resources, and funding resources.
