EXAMINES A VARIETY OF FEATURES OF CALIFORNIA PRISONS IN TERMS OF STRATEGIES OF CONTROL AS A PRINCIPLE FOR UNDERSTANDING THE WAY IN WHICH PRISON ACTIVITIES ARE ORGANIZED.
Abstract
IT IS CONCLUDED THAT PRISON OFFICIALS ARE PERSISTENTLY CONCERNED TO FIND WAYS TO GET INMATES TO ACT ACCORDING TO THE DESIRES OF THE OFFICIALS. THIS CONCERN OF THE OFFICIALS IS SEEN TO COLOR THE WAY THEY ASSESS PERSONS AND ACTIVITIES AFFECTING PRISONS. IT IS NOTED THAT RESOURCES IN PRISONS FOR ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING AUTHORITY ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY. EXISTING REWARDS AND PUNISHMENTS ARE DISCUSSED.
