Abstract
Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. On the anabolic side, testosterone stimulates muscle growth and controls body fat distribution. These are the results that many body builders and athletes wish to achieve. The muscle building effects of anabolic steroids are fulfilled only when steroid administration is accompanied with extensive exercise and weight lifting training. Established side effects and adverse reactions from anabolic steroids include cancer, an increase in cholesterol levels, heart and liver disease, testicular atrophy or sterility, and high blood pressure. Behavioral effects include aggressiveness, combativeness, paranoia, depression, and mood swings. The Federal Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990 mandates the Drug Enforcement Administration to halt steroid trafficking and abuse. The statute added anabolic steroids to the list of substance classified as Schedule III drugs under the Federal Controlled Substance Act. This report discusses the production and sources for illegal anabolic steroids, methods of ingestion, and prices. 6 notes, copy of the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990, and data on Drug Enforcement Administration domestic steroid arrests and seizures for fiscal year 1991 through June 19, 1992
