One of the major problems facing rape research is the disparity between number of rapes reported on victim surveys and the number reported to the police. As a result, several States have revised their rape statutes to encourage reporting. This paper examines rapes reported to the San Diego, California Police Department between 1971 and 1975.
Abstract
The final year of this study is important because it was the first full year that a revised rape statute was in effect. Thus, we can examine whether reporting patterns changed in 1975. We assume that the statute revision increases the likelihood that a victim and her peers will report the assault as rape (see, Williams, 1984:460-461). (Author abstract)
