A total of 112 countries present statistics on the manufacture and trade of psychotropic substances for 1988 in accordance with the Convention of 1971 on Psychotropic Substances, Resolution I of the United Nations Conference for the Adoption of a Protocol on Psychotropic Substances, and Resolution 1576(L) of the Economic and Social Council.
Abstract
Data and information are presented under four drug schedules. Schedule I substances, all of which are hallucinogens or central nervous system stimulants, are under national control and prohibited, except for scientific and limited medical purposes. Accordingly, stocks, manufacture of, and trade in these substances is limited. Statistics are therefore not provided for the drugs in this schedule. Most of the substances included in Schedule II are central nervous system stimulants of the amphetamine type; Schedule III substances are sedative hypnotics. Schedule IV encompasses sedative hypnotics and tranquilizers. The tabular data for drugs in Schedules II, III, and IV cover manufacturers' stocks on December 31st; quantity manufactured; quantity used for the manufacture of preparations exempted under article 3 paragraphs 2 and 3 of the 1971 convention; quantity used for the manufacture of nonpsychotropic substances or products; total imports; details of imports by country of origin; total exports; and details of exports by country of destination. Narrative comments are provided on significant trends. Data are provided for 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988.
