Annotation

Statistics are provided on terrorists detained in Great Britain in accordance with provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act of 1974.

Abstract

During 1999, 12 persons were detained in connection with Northern Ireland terrorism, down from 20 in 1998. Also during 1999, 87 persons were detained in connection with international terrorism, up from 25 in 1998. Former powers to make exclusion orders were not used in 1999 and have now lapsed. Of 99 persons detained in 1999, 84 were charged with offense. Extensions of detention were granted for 8 persons. Data also showed 437 persons were examined for more than 1 hour but were not detained; 29 were charged with an offense.
