Abstract
In 1995, there was a further increase in notifications of methadone addiction which was reported in over 45 percent of notifications. Notifications of addiction to cocaine also rose but still accounted for less than 10 percent of reports. As in all years since 1991, more new drug addicts were notified by hospitals and treatment centers in 1995 than by general medical practitioners. The number of drug addicts notified by prison medical officers increased by 29 percent between 1994 and 1995. The proportion of all injecting drug addicts declined from 54 percent in 1994 to 51 percent in 1995. The proportion of new injecting drug addicts fell from 56 percent to 48 percent during the same period, and the number of new injecting drug addicts decreased by 400 to 6,400. More than 1,600 drug-related deaths were registered in 1994, a rise of 17 percent over 1993. Detailed statistical data are tabulated on specific drugs of addiction and on the sex and age of drug addicts. 27 notes, 28 tables, and 12 figures
