Abstract
Individual chapters explain how professionals use statistics in criminal justice, discuss the problems encountered in applying statistics to research problems, and introduce basic concepts of measurement and basic methods for using statistics to describe data. Further chapters focus on how researchers use statistics to address the problem of using a small sample to make statements about large populations, with emphasis on the statistical procedures and tests used, special problems encountered in criminal justice research, and ways to approach these problems. Further chapters examine methods for improving the design of a research project, with emphasis on the concept of statistical power. The book’s final chapters examine correlation and regression, including multivariate regression modeling. Figures; tables; lists of major terms, questions, and exercises for each chapter; glossary; appended tables; footnotes; index; and attached data disk for use in completing chapter exercises
