Statistical tables describing the background characteristics and recidivism rates of individuals released from Massachusetts correctional institutions in 1974 are provided.
Abstract
The statistics cover men released from the Walpole, Norfolk, Concord, and Framingham facilities; the three forestry camps; and the six prerelease centers. Also included are data on women released from the Framingham facility and from Charlotte House Pre-Release Center. A recidivist was defined as any subject who was returned to a Federal or State correctional institution or to a county house of correction or jail for 30 days or more. The followup period was 1 year from the date of release to the community. A total of 59 background variables were used to provide the descriptive analysis of the 911 individuals released, and these variables were also used as a framework for a differential analysis of recidivism rates. Sections focus on the variables related to release, present offense, personal background, criminal history, furlough, and release followup. The use of the tables is explained in an introduction.
