Abstract
About 44 percent of those committed had a history of drug use, about 1 in 5 youths were committed for crimes against persons, and the average youth committed was at nearly the 9th grade level. Eighty percent of youth were recommitted, and 70 were returned as parole violators. The average age of committed youth was 15.1 years. Nearly 80 percent of prior adjudications were for property offenses, and 35 percent were referred to a juvenile court before their 13th birthday. Data are provided on youth commitments by region, age and grade level, race, and offense type. Statistics are also tabulated on the risk of reoffending, facility length of stay, discharges from custody, and community care services. Appendixes present additional data on reasons for youth commitments, commitments by circuit and county, and facility utilization. 6 tables and 16 figures
