Abstract
This handbook addresses the specific needs and rights of a victim or witness including the following: the Wyoming Bill of Rights, an overview of the criminal justice system, victim-witness service providers, how victims and witnesses are involved in the criminal justice system, what happens when a victim reports a crime, investigation of the crime, when the offender will be arrested, pre-trial stage and preparing the criminal case, the different types of crimes and how a charge is determined, what to do if contacted by a defense attorney or private investigator, what happens to belongings taken into evidence, right of victim to know what is happening with their case, what cases go to trial, the trial, the sentencing process, serving the sentence, civil suits, post-sentencing issues, victims' notification program, Juvenile Court, Federal victims and witnesses, public and private assistance, a Glossary of Legal Terms, and two appendices: A -- Restitution and B -- program lists.
