THE 1977 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM PRESENTS STATISTICAL TABLES AND ANALYSES FOR PART I AND II CRIMES COMMITTED IN THE STATE.
Abstract
THE REPORTING PROCEDURE, WHICH IS BASED ON THE FBI NATIONAL UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS METHODOLOGY, IS DETAILED. A PROFILE IS GIVEN FOR THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA DETAILING A BRIEF HISTORY, TOPOGRAPHY, COMPOSITION, POPULATION, RESOURCES, EDUCATION, AND RECREATION, FACTORS WHICH AFFECT CRIME INCLUDING DENSITY AND SIZE OF COMMUNITY POPULATION, COMPOSITION OF POPULATION, AND CLIMATE, ARE EXPLORED. THE CRIME INDEX TABULATION PROCEDURES ARE EXPLAINED, AND IT IS NOTED THAT SINCE WEST VIRGINIA HAS NO CITY POPULATION OVER 100,000, CALCULATIONS ARE BASED ON OFFENSES PER 1,000 PERSONS. A SYNOPSIS OF THE ANNUAL REPORT PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE DATA ON POPULATION, NUMBER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT EMPLOYEES, THE INDEX CRIME VOLUME, THE INDEX CRIME FREQUENCIES (A TOTAL OF 1 EVERY 12.7 MINUTES), AND THE INDEX CRIME RATES (A TOTAL OF 2,230.7 PER 100,000 RESIDENTS). INDEX CRIME CLEARANCE RATES ARE AN OVERALL 22.7 PERCENT, 64 PERCENT FOR VIOLENT CRIMES AND 19.6 PERCENT FOR NON-VIOLENT CRIMES. DATA ON INDEX CRIME ARRESTS, 55.5 PERCENT IN LARCENY THEFT, VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN, AND NUMBER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS KILLED OR ASSAULTED ARE GIVEN. OFFENSE DATA IS PRESENTED FOR TOTAL OFFENSES, VIOLENT AND NONVIOLENT CRIMES, VALUE OF PROPERTY STOLEN, A 5-YEAR VIEW, AND FOR INDIVIDUAL PART I CRIMES. ARREST DATA IS BROKEN DOWN BY RACE, SEX, AND AGE. THE CRIME INDEX REPORT INDICATES THE VOLUME AND DISTRIBUTION OF CRIME FOR PART I CRIMES BROKEN DOWN BY COUNTY, STATE, AND MUNICIPALITIES.
