Abstract
Following a description of the structure of the State police organization statewide, the operation of the district headquarters control room is explained, including the capability of its computer systems. The primary State police responsibilities portrayed are dealing with accidents, assisting motorists, and enforcing traffic laws. Police procedures discussed include stopping a motorist for a driving violation, checking unoccupied vehicles on the roadside, helping stranded motorists, investigating and reporting traffic accidents, and apprehending drunk drivers. Other trooper tasks discussed are testimony in traffic court and closing highways in an emergency. Specialized services considered are school bus inspections, security for certain State officials, the enforcement of highway weight laws, and school safety programs. Equipment discussed includes patrol vehicles, mobile communications vans, and airplanes and helicopters. Numerous photographs illustrate the text.
