This report presents statistical tabular data reflecting criminal activity in Oklahoma during calendar year 1977; crime rates, arrest statistics, and some comparative data from previous years are included.
Abstract
Index crimes in Oklahoma totaled 116,541 for 1977, constituting 4,145.9 offenses per 100,000. This represents a decrease in the total number of Index crimes of 5.2 percent over those reported in 1976. The number of violent crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, and felonious assault, increased 13 percent over those reported in 1976. Nonviolent crimes, including breaking and entering, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft, reflected a 6.4-percent decrease over the previous year. Property valued at $46,444,036 was reported stolen in 1977; of this amount, 34.1 percent was recovered. A total of 240 murders were reported in 1977, and 5 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty. There was a 19.6-percent clearance rate for all Index crimes and an 18.8-percent clearance rate for all offenses. A total of 23,293 arrests were made for Index crimes, constituting 14.8 percent of all arrests made during the year. Arrests of juveniles amounted to 16.3 percent of all persons arrested during 1977. There were 10,903 reported arrests for drug abuse violations. Employee data, a glossary, and extensive graphs and tables are provided. (Author abstract modified)
