THE FOURTH PHASE OF THE STATE JUDICIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (SJIS) PROJECT, FUNDED BY THE LEAA TO ASSIST STATES IN THE EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF COURT SYSTEMS, IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
AS PART OF THE FOURTH PHASE OF THE PROJECT, THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR STATE COURTS WAS REQUESTED TO PREPARE A PROPOSAL IN 1977 FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASSUMING MANAGEMENT, FINANCIAL, AND PROJECT RESPONSIBILITY OVER THE SJIS EFFORT. EMPHASIS IN INDIVIDUAL STATES WAS PLACED ON THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF JUDICIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS. ACTIVITIES INVOLVED ASSISTING STATES IN SUCH AREAS AS GRANT REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT, TECHNICAL AID, INFORMATION TRANSFER, LONG-RANGE PLANNING, AND INDEPTH ANALYSIS OF KEY TOPICS RELEVANT TO THE SJIS PROJECT. SEVERAL TASKS WERE PERFORMED THAT PROVIDED DIRECT SERVICES TO INDIVIDUAL STATES. ONSITE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND INFORMATION TRANSFER SERVICES WERE PROVIDED TO MANY STATE COURT ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES. GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR CONTINUED LEAA FUNDING OF SJIS PROJECTS WERE RECEIVED FROM FIVE PARTICIPATING STATES. IN ADDITION, 12 STATES THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN AWARDED SJIS GRANTS RECEIVED ONSITE ASSESSMENTS TO APPRAISE THE ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL STATUS OF PROJECTS. FIVE REPORTS WERE PRODUCED THAT ARE OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO STATES PARTICIPATING IN THE SJIS PROJECT AS WELL AS TO NONPARTICIPATING STATES. THE CONTENTS OF THESE REPORTS ARE DETAILED. A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF THE SJIS PROJECT IS PRESENTED, AND INITIAL PROJECT ACTIVITIES ARE NOTED. (DEP)
