This document describes data collection procedures and file structure. It provides machine-readable codebooks for State court caseload statistics for 1978-1980.
Abstract
Data sources included published annual reports, unpublished materials supplied by court administrators and clerks, and telephone contacts and correspondence. Variables covered by the codebooks relate to State trial and appellate court caseloads and criminal, civil, and traffic dispositions in State trial courts. In addition to providing the full-text question describing each variable, the codebooks specify variable labels, values, locations, and other information. Also provided are a description of the study methodology and variable description lists for the five codebooks. Appendixes provide State and State court identification values and code frequency data.
