Summary tables in Part 1 display the 1977 caseflow of appellate counts and trial courts for the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Appellate courts are subdivided into courts of last resort and intermediate appellate courts. The tables present caseflow (with various analyses), civil and criminal breakdowns, and time-to-disposition of appeals. Other statistics include 10-year trends in filings for some States, as well as the number and present changes in filings for these courts. Court system charts illustrate each court's jurisdiction. Tables in Part II contain the actual caseload statistics used in compiling summary tables in Part I. State profiles present the organization chart for the State court system, followed by statistical profiles for the court(s) of last resort, intermediate appellate court(s), general jurisdiction court(s), and limited or special jurisdiction court(s). Each profile includes its data source. Appendixes include a list of data sources from each State and a discussion of the estimation procedure. The report also describes the methodology used by the National Court Statistics Project in compiling this information, as well as data limitations. An index of tables and of court profiles is provided.
