This report details the services and activities of the Federal Bureau of Prisons during 1992.
Abstract
During the past two decades the inmate population has nearly doubled, more than 20 new correctional facilities have been added, and the Bureau has developed the organizational structures to support this increase in size. The Bureau's Director since 1987, who recently retired, increased the Bureau's reliance on strategic planning and management information systems, led outreach efforts to other law enforcement agencies, led efforts to explore intermediate sanctions, and emphasized the importance of offender reintegration into the community. The current director had been an assistant director from May 1989 to December 1992. Bureau activities during 1992 focused on program evaluation, planning, improvement of inmate programs, staff recruitment, technological improvements, expanded intermediate sanctions, interagency cooperation, and community outreach.
