These revised national standards for adult correctional institutions cover institution administration and organization, fiscal management, personnel and staff development, recordkeeping, facility conditions, and corrections services.
Abstract
They address facility sanitation and inmate health care, rights, and rules and discipline. Communication and visiting procedures, inmate work programs, library and religious services, and recreational activities are some of the other topics of concern. Most standards are grounded in relevant court decisions and serve to reduce corrections administrators' discretion and operational latitude. Correctional institutions can use them as a tool for accreditation and as guidelines for self-improvement, as well as to stimulate change. The text includes a glossary and index, the American Correctional Association Code of Ethics, and a list of standards cross-referenced to the initial manual.
