To promote the professionalism of correctional officers, the International Association of Correctional Officers (IACO) has established minimum standards for corrections-related higher education programs.
Abstract
The IACO's Council on Curriculum Development in Corrections surveyed all 50 State departments of corrections, several metropolitan departments, and numerous universities and colleges offering courses in corrections to provide a broad basis of professional and academic input into its deliberations. The curriculum will consists of six components: corrections in the criminal justice system, correctional practices, basic communications in corrections, offender behavior and development, juvenile justice and corrections, and ethical and legal issues in corrections. Changes in the institutions and the correctional system as a whole require that correctional officers be capable of interacting with offenders and which colleagues in a manner which reflects attitudinal change and a knowledge base different from that generally accepted in the past. 5 notes
