This volume contains the agenda for and printed materials relevant to the Tribal Law and Policy Institute Conference, at the Prairie Wind Casino on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, September 17-19, 2001.
Abstract
The Conference, Stand Up for the Children and Watch Out for Them, was sponsored by the Oglala Lakota CASA (National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association) Program. It focused on child maltreatment and on programs and services for Lakota children. The national CASA program provides training and technical assistance for the development and enhancement of tribal court CASA programs. Conference participants discussed, among other topics: (1) how to recognize trauma in children; (2) emotional reactions of children to domestic violence; (3) Indian Health Service mental health services; (4) the Oglala Lakota CASA Program; (5) forensic interviews; (6) the process of child sexual abuse investigations; (7) interrogating child molesters; (8) self-care practices for child abuse responders; (9) roles of tribal leaders in child protection; (10) child sexual abuse protocol development; (11) confidentiality issues and victim advocacy; and (12) dealing with the non-offending parent.
