RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY PATTERNS IN ST. PETERSBURG, FLA, ARE REVIEWED FOR THE YEAR 1977. NEIGHBORHOOD ANALYSES DISCUSS AREA CHARACTERISTICS, BURGLARY PATTERNS, AND PROPERTY STOLEN.
Abstract
FOLLOWING AN OVERVIEW OF BURGLARY LOSSES FOR THE CITY AS A WHOLE, AN ANALYSIS IS PROVIDED FOR EACH OF 31 NEIGHBORHOODS. THE NEIGHBORHOOD ANALYSES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION: BOUNDARIES OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS UNDER DISCUSSION; A BREAKDOWN OF RACIAL COMPOSITION BASED ON THE 1976 SPECIAL CENSUS; A REPORT ON TOTAL NUMBER OF HOUSING UNITS IN THE AREA, INCLUDING AN ACCOUNT OF THE TYPES OF HOUSING FOUND; BURGLARY PATTERNS, INCLUDING SUSPECT AND VICTIM INFORMATION; AND A DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY STOLEN. IN 1977 RESIDENTS OF ST. PETERSBURG REPORTED 3289 BURGLARIES WITH A TOTAL PROPERTY LOSS OF $700,000. ONLY $64,000 OF THIS AMOUNT EVER WAS RECOVERED. BURGLARY IS TRADITIONALLY A DIFFICULT CRIME TO SOLVE; IN 1977 ONLY 19 PERCENT OF ST. PETERSBURG'S BURGLARIES WERE CLEARED. OF THESE CASES, 283 INVOLVED JUVENILES. RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES HAVE DROPPED SINCE 1974; THE 1977 FIGURES WERE 19 PERCENT BELOW THOSE OF 1976. SPECIAL NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS ARE GIVEN CREDIT FOR THIS DECREASE. THIS IS BASICALLY A STATISTICAL REPORT. MAPS ARE INCLUDED. (GLR)
