AN ANALYSIS OF TIME SERIES DATA ON A NUMBER OF OFFENSE TYPES FOR A MEDIUM-SIZED CITY IS PERFORMED TO EXAMINE CERTAIN APSECTS OF THE STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF THES SERIES AND TO ILLUSTRATE THE SPECTRAL ANALYSIS PROCEDURE.
Abstract
SPECTRAL ANALYSIS IS A RELATIVELY NEW STATISTICAL METHOD WHICH DECOMPOSES A TIME SERIES INTO A NUMBER OF FREQUENCY BANDS OR CYCLES. THE ANALYST CAN THEN MEASURE THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF EACH FREQUENCY BAND IN TERMS OF ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE VARIANCE OF THE ENTIRE SERIES. THE METHOD OF SPECTRAL ANALYSIS IS FIRST DESCRIBED, USING ANALOGIES TO FAMILIAR LEAST SQUARES REGRESSION METHODS. BOTH SPECTRAL AND CROSS-SPECTRAL ANALYSIS ARE THEN EMPLOYED TO TEST SELECTED HYPOTHESES CONCERNING THE DATA. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
