This handbook for criminal justice practitioners provides information on about 170 social service programs helpful to defendants in New York City.
Abstract
The following programs are represented: alcoholism treatment, drug treatment, education, job placement, vocational training, outpatient mental health services, residential mental health, multi/special services, prisoner and ex-offender services, Puerto Rican and Hispanic resources, residential programs, veterans' programs, women's programs, and youth programs. For each social service program listed, a phone number and contact person are listed, along with the type of program and a brief description that covers client eligibility and characteristics and types of services offered. The agency affiliate is listed in some cases. Most of the agencies listed are familiar with defendants' special needs, courts' procedures and demands, and the concerns of other parties in criminal cases. Criminal justice practitioners can use this information to develop community-based alternatives to incarceration in appropriate cases. An agency index is provided.
