TRANSCRIPTS OF SELECTED SPEECHES FROM A THREE DAY CONFERENCE ON COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS THAT WAS HELD IN 1971.
Abstract
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS IS DISCUSSED WITH REFERENCE TO THE PROGRAMS UNDERTAKEN BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS. THE SPEECH ON TRANSITIONAL OR GRADUATED RELEASE PROGRAMS USES AS AN EXAMPLE BROOKS HOUSE, A PRIVATE HALFWAY HOUSE IN BOSTON. THE PLANNING, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IS DESCRIBED AND CONCLUDES THAT THE CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS OF VERMONT, FLORIDA, AND SOUTH CAROLINA ARE WORTHY OF EMULATION. THE FINAL SPEECH IS CONCERNED WITH THE IMPACT OF COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONS ON OTHER CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES. ALSO INCLUDED IS A PANEL DISCUSSION ABOUT OVERCOMING BARRIERS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS PROGRAMS.
