This is a report on the state of the judiciary in South Dakota and fiscal year 1999 annual report of the South Dakota Unified Judicial System.
Abstract
The report contains data concerning: (1) Supreme Court appointment, membership, jurisdiction, and caseload; (2) Circuit Court; (3) Judicial Staffing (Supreme Court Judicial Staff, Office of the State Court Administrator, Circuit Judicial Staff); (4) Finances, Receipts, and Disbursements; (5) Civil Caseload; (6) Criminal Caseload; and (7) Court Service Caseload. During fiscal year 1999 the Unified Judicial System (UJS) was implementing a Court Automated Tracking System to track probationers and provide statewide information to court services officers and the law enforcement community. The UJS implemented the Child Support Referee System to more rapidly and effectively address the needs of people seeking modification of child support orders, and developed record search centers to improve response time in handling public inquiries. In probation programs, the judiciary continued to emphasize the importance of restorative justice. Tables, figures
