The 1996-1997 annual report of the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) identifies significant events and accomplishments and examines the changing face of corrections in the State.
Abstract
The SCDC has 32 correctional institutions and 1 under construction. More than 21,000 inmates are housed in SCDC facilities, and the correctional system has 6,492 employees and 24 prison industries. Significant accomplishments during the year are noted that concern substance abuse prevention, bond funding, personnel salaries, the relocation of death row, the implementation of videoconferenced parole hearings, the creation of a visitation center, and the donation of money by inmates to victims. The SCDC has made several organizational changes to streamline operations, and legislation has been enacted to improve South Carolina's correctional system. The annual report covers performance and efficiency measures employed by the SCDC and cooperative agreements between the SCDC and other State agencies and contains information on the SCDC budget and personnel, statistics on inmates, and information on prison security levels.
