Abstract
The Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics compiles annual statistical information about crime and criminal justice in the United States. In this 29th annual edition of the Sourcebook, data is provided on crime and the administration of justice and public attitudes towards various crime and justice issues in the year 2001. The report is divided into six sections: (1) characteristics of the criminal justice systems; (2) public attitudes toward crime and criminal justice-related topics; (3) nature and distribution of known offenses; (4) characteristics and distribution of persons arrested; (5) judicial processing of defendants; and (6) persons under correctional supervision. Included for the first time in this edition of the Sourcebook are tables displaying statistics on use of DNA evidence by State court prosecutors, public attitudes toward the causes and consequences of underage drinking, recidivism rates of State prisoners from the first study on the subject since the 1980's, students reporting fear of victimization at school, persons detained by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and the use of firearms by offenders.
