This volume presents statistical information from a variety of sources regarding crime and criminal justice in the United States; the information is national in scope or of national relevance.
Wherever possible, the statistics are displayed by regions, States, and cities to increase their usefulness for local decisionmakers and for comparative analyses. The book has six sections covering the following topics: (1) characteristics of the criminal justice systems, (2) public attitudes toward crime and criminal justice-related topics, (3) the nature and distribution of known offenses, (4) the characteristics and distribution of persons arrested, (5) the judicial processing of defendants, and (6) persons under correctional supervision. Each section opens with an overview of its contents. Data tables, annotated source lists and list of publishers, and explanatory appendixes
