This 17th annual compilation of criminal justice statistics for 1989 displays data by region, city, and State that reflect characteristics of criminal justice systems, public attitudes toward crime, the nature and distribution of known offenses, characteristics of arrestees, the judicial processing of defendants, and persons under correctional supervision.
Abstract
Data are presented on the number and type of criminal justice agencies and employees; criminal justice expenditures; public opinion polls on such matters are fear of victimization, the death penalty, prison reform, gun control, and drug use; arrestees by age, sex, race, and geographic area; the number of juveniles and adults processed through the courts; characteristics, disposition, and sentencing of defendants; persons on probation and parole; the population and movement of State and Federal prison inmates; and characteristics of State prison inmates. Appendixes provide additional data and procedural information on data collection. An annotated list of sources and extensive tables and figures are included.
