DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CONVENTIONAL, AUTHORITARIAN VALUE PATTERN HELD BY POLICE AND THE MORE UNCONVENTIONAL, INTRACEPTIVE-SUBJECTIVE PATTERN HELD BY ADDICTS ARE VERY LIKELY TO PRODUCE INTENSIFICATION OF ROLE CONFLICTS.
Abstract
THE STUDY EMPLOYS THE ROKEACH VALUE SURVEY TO ANALYSE AND COMPARE THE VALUE SYSTEMS OF A SAMPLE OF DRUG ADDICTS WITH THE VALUE SYSTEMS OF ROKEACH'S SAMPLE OF POLICE. THE VALUE RANKING INSTRUMENT CONSISTS OF ONE SET OF 18 TERMINAL VALUES WHICH CONCERN DESIRABLE END STATES OF EXISTENCE AND ONE SET OF 18 INSTRUMENTAL VALUES CONCERNED WITH DESIRABLE MODES OF BEHAVIOUR. THE TWO SETS OF VALUES ARE PRESENTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER TO THE RESPONDENT WHOSE TASK IS TO RANK ORDER EACH SET IN RELATION TO THEIR ORDER OF IMPORTANCE TO THE RESPONDENT AS GUIDING PRINCIPLES IN HIS OR HER LIFE. MEDIAN SPLITS OF COMBINED RANKING DISTRIBUTIONS WERE TESTED BY A CHISQUARE ANALYSIS, AND SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE OBTAINED BETWEEN POLICE AND VARIOUS GROUPS OF RESIDENTIAL ADDICTS (ALL ADDICTS, WHITE, BLACK, MALE, FEMALE, WHITE MALE, ETC.). TABLES SHOW THE TERMINAL AND INSTRUMENTAL VALUE DATA FOR POLICE AND RESIDENTIAL ADDICT GROUPS. THE TABLES SHOW, FOR ALL VALUES, THE MEDIAN RANKING PLUS THE RANKING ORDER FROM 1 TO 18 (COMPOSITE RANK ORDER) FOR THOSE MEDIANS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
