THIS AUDIOVISUAL KIT TEACHES YOUNGSTERS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE AND INSTRUCTS THEM TO TALK ABOUT ABUSE WITH TEACHERS OR TRUSTED ADULTS. ITS USE CAN HELP PROVIDE A SETTING IN WHICH CHILDREN ARE COMFORTABLE IN CONFIDING PROBLEMS.
Abstract
A GOAL OF THE KIT IS TO HELP CHILDREN IDENTIFY CHILD ABUSE AS SERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURY THAT HAPPENS REPEATEDLY AND DISTINGUISH THE ABUSE FROM NORMAL DISCIPLINE. IT TELLS CHILDREN WHOM TO GO TO FOR HELP IF THEY KNOW A CHILD WHO THEY BELIEVE IS BEING ABUSED AND HELPS THEM UNDERSTAND THAT PARENTS INVOLVED IN CHILD ABUSE ARE NOT BAD PEOPLE BUT ARE PEOPLE UNDER STRESS WHO NEED AND CAN GET HELP. ALSO, IT EXPLAINS THAT CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ABUSE THEY HAVE RECEIVED. MOST IMPORTANT, THE KIT EMPHASIZES THAT 'TATTLING' CAN BE THE APPROPRIATE RESPONSE WHEN OTHERS' SAFETY IS IN JEOPARDY. THE FILMSTRIP DISCUSSES CHILD ABUSE THROUGH THE USE OF PUPPETS. THE KIT CONTAINS A COLOR FILMSTRIP, AN AUDIO CASSETTE, AN INFORMATION BOOKLET, AND A TEACHER'S GUIDE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--PRG)
