REPORT ON SEVERAL INMATE PROGRAMS DEVELOPED SINCE 1968 WHICH EMPHASIZE VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYMENT AND ATTEMPT TO MINIMIZE THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF IMPRISONMENT.
Abstract
INNOVATIONS INCLUDE A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING SCHOOL ON THE PRISON GROUNDS ATTENDED BY BOTH PRISONERS AND NON-OFFENDERS (MALE AND FEMALE). OUTSIDE THE COMPOUND IS A HOTEL WHERE INMATES CAN STAY WITH THEIR RELATIVES ON WEEK-ENDS. ANOTHER INNOVATION IS AN OPEN PRISON WHERE INMATES ARE EMPLOYED IN THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF PREFABRICATED HOUSES, EARNING THE NORMAL TRADE UNION SALARY. TWICE A MONTH, THESE PRISONERS ARE ALLOWED TO VISIT THEIR RELATIVES FOR THE WEEKEND, IF THEY CAN PAY THE TRAVEL EXPENSES. --IN FRENCH
