THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR ANALYZING LONGITUDINAL DATA IS REVIEWED.
Abstract
THE REVIEW DESCRIBES THE VARIOUS TECHNIQUES AND ILLUSTRATES THEIR APPLICATIONS IN TABLES AND EQUATIONS DRAWN FROM LONGITUDINAL STUDIES IN DRUG ABUSE AND OTHER FIELDS. THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS OF THE TECHNIQUES AT THE TIME OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT ARE EXPLAINED. THE REVIEW BEGINS WITH THE 16-FOLD TABLE (A DEVICE FOR ORGANIZING LONGITUDINAL DATA, SUCH AS RESPONSES TO THE SAME QUESTION BY THE SAME SUBJECT AT DIFFERENT TIMES, FOR COMPARISON) AND ENDS WITH A REVIEW OF THE MARKOV CHAIN DEVELOPMENT. THE DISCUSSION ALSO TOUCHES UPON THE FOLLOWING: CROSS-LAGGED CORRELATION; THE ALTERNATIVE USE OF DICHOTOMIES AND QUANTITATIVE VARIABLES; PATH ANALYSIS; AND THE ROLE OF NONOBSERVABLES OR LATENT STRUCTURE ANALYSIS. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS PROVIDED. (LKM)
