Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: Its Effective Use in Agency Settings

NCJ Number

265 pages
This book acts as a resource describing the concept and methods behind the solution-focused brief therapy approach in providing a more efficient and effective treatment for clients suffering from substance abuse, as well as other potentially life-threatening problems.
This book is intended as a practical guide for therapists, supervisors, and administrators wanting to implement the solution-focused therapy approach in individual, group, or agency settings, a transition from a traditional treatment model. This program switches its theoretical orientation from problem-focused to solution-focused. The book provides the tools involved in implementing the approach, as well as a detailed description of how to structure a group therapy session, format supervision, work collaboratively with referring sources and write session notes. It details the technical aspects of the changeover. Written in the context of treating substance abuse clients, the approach is useful for other programs, such as community mental health centers, residential treatment programs, day care facilities, and many other human service providers and agencies. The concepts and ideas can be readily generalized to the agency or agency intended. Appendix, notes, bibliography, and index
