THE REVIEW OF A RECENT WORK ON THE DEVIANCE OF CONTROL IS THE POINT OF DEPARTURE FOR AN ANALYSIS OF POWER IN THE CONTEXT OF ORDER AND CONTROL IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE.
Abstract
THIS ARTICLE ANALYZES, ACCORDING TO VARIOUS TRADITIONAL THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE STUDY OF POWER, SOCIAL CONTROL, AND DEVIANCE, INCLUDING THE NEWER INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE NATURE OF INSTITUTIONALIZED DEVIANCE VERSUS DEVIANCE AS THE TARGET OF CONTROL. THE APPEARANCE OF THIS CONCEPTUAL CONCENTRATION IN THE STUDY OF POLICE FUNCTIONS SUGGESTS NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE UNDERSTANDING OF OFFICIAL AND STRUCTURED DEVIANCE. ATTENTION IS ALSO FOCUSED ON THE ONGOING LAW VERSUS JUSTICE DEBATE IN CONNECTION WITH A NEW, CONTROVERSIAL BOOK. THE SOCIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE IS BEGINNING TO APPLY ITS INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CONTROL AND CRIME. SOCIAL CONTROL AND THE POLICE AS AN INSTRUMENT OF POWER ARE ANALYZED WITHIN THE CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF A NEW CRIME-CONTROL MODEL CAPABLE OF EXPLAINING OFFICIAL DEVIANCE AND FOCUSING DIRECTLY ON THE LOCUS OF POWER WITHIN THE STRUCTURED DEMANDS OF ORGANIZATION. A BIBLIOGRAPHY CONTAINING APPROXIMATELY 45 ENTRIES IS APPENDED.
