THE SEVENTEEN SELECTIONS IN THIS ANTHOLOGY PROVIDE A SAMPLING OF PAST AND CURRENT BRITISH WRITINGS ON THE SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY.
Abstract
RECOGNIZING THAT THE THEORETICAL SIDE OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY TENDS TO BE DOMINATED BY AMERICAN WRITERS, ONE OF THIS VOLUME'S MAIN OBJECTIVES IS THE PRESENTATION OF MATERIAL WHICH HAS EXAMINED SUCH THEORIES IN A SPECIFICALLY BRITISH CONTEXT. AT THE SAME TIME, THIS TEXT TRACES HISTORICALLY THE INDEPENDENT DEVELOPMENT OF DISTINCTIVELY BRITISH PERSPECTIVES CONSTITUTING THE BACKGROUND AGAINST WHICH THE PARTIAL ASSIMILATION OF AMERICAN IDEAS HAS TAKEN PLACE. SELECTIONS IN THE FIRST SECTION OF THE TEXT DATE FROM 1848 TO 1940, AND PRESENT THE EARLIEST GROWTH OF BRITISH CRIMINOLOGY. A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF POSTWAR WRITING ON THE SUBJECT OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY IN BRITAIN IS THEN PRESENTED. THE FINAL SECTION INCLUDES MODERN WRITINGS ON THE CONTROL OF CRIME AND DELINQUENCY.
