FOUNDED IN 1972 TO COMBAT RISING CRIME RATES, INDIA'S INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY AND FORENSIC SCIENCE GIVES INSERVICE TRAINING TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE PERSONNEL AND DOES CRIMINOLOGY AND FORENSIC SCIENCE RESEARCH.
Abstract
THE INSTITUTE SERVES ALL BRANCHES OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, INCLUDING POLICE, PROSECUTORS, PRISON OFFICIALS, AND THE JUDICIARY. DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY AND FORENSIC SCIENCE (ICFS) INTO A FULLFLEDGED COLLEGE OFFERING POSTGRADUATE CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION IS EXPECTED IN THE FUTURE. ICFS PROGRAMS ARE SHORT TERM AND FACULTY IS SUPPLEMENTED BY GUEST SPEAKERS FROM A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES. COURSES OFFERED IN CRIMINOLOGY INCLUDE COMMUNITY RELATIONS, RESEARCH METHODS FOR SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS, AND OTHER COURSES IN ADVANCED CRIMINOLOGY AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE. DESIGNED TO PROMOTE THE INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS OF SPECIALISTS WORKING IN FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORIES, FORENSIC SCIENCE COURSES COVER DOCUMENTS EXAMINATION, BALLISTICS, TOXICOLOGY, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND FORENSIC BIOLOGY. TWO OTHER COURSES, FOR POLICE AND JUDICIAL OFFICIALS RESPECTIVELY, TEACH SCIENTIFIC METHODS IN CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS AND CRIME DETECTION. CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH AREAS INCLUDE THEORIES AND CAUSES OF CRIME, ALCOHOL AND PROHIBITION, AND SOCIAL-CULTURAL DYNAMICS, WHILE THE FORENSIC SCIENCE DEPARTMENT PROJECTS AIM AT DEVELOPING NEW TECHNIQUES, ACQUIRING INFORMATION, OR MAKING FORENSIC SCIENCE BREAKTHROUGHS. THE ICFS ALSO HAS A MODEST BUT STEADILY GROWING LIBRARY. TABLES AND PICTURES ARE INCLUDED. (PAP)
