THE DIFFERENT NEEDS OF SOCIAL WORKERS INVOLVED WITH THE JUVENILE COURTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONTENT AND METHOD IN A TRAINING PROGRAM ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
THE BRITISH CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS ACT OF 1969 GREATLY EXTENDED THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LOCAL AUTHORITY SOCIAL WORKER OF THE JUVENILE COURT. IT IS STATED THAT TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR THESE SOCIAL WORKERS MUST VARY ACCORDING TO INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE AND PREVIOUS TRAINING. TRAINING SUGGESTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR NEWLY APPOINTED UNTRAINED SOCIAL WORKERS, TRAINEE SOCIAL WORKERS, NEWLY APPOINTED TRAINED SOCIAL WORKERS, SOCIAL WORKERS TRANSFERRED FROM OTHER WORK, AND SOCIAL WORKERS TRANSFERRED FROM OTHER AGENCIES. AREAS OF STUDY IN SOCIAL WORKER TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE ALSO LISTED. AMONG THE SUGGESTED TOPICS ARE ROLES WITHIN THE COURT SETTING, COURT PROCEDURES, EVIDENCE, THE SOCIAL WORKER'S REPORT TO THE COURT, AND LEGISLATION AFFECTING PROFESSIONAL DUTIES. TEACHING METHODS SUCH AS GROUP DISCUSSION AND ROLE PLAYING ARE DESCRIBED. THREE SUGGESTED EXERCISES FOR TRAINING SOCIAL WORKERS ARE APPENDED.
