THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE WORK UNDER TAKEN BY PROBATION OFFICERS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING - HOMES, FRIENDS, AND EMPLOYMENT - OF CLIENTS AGED SEVENTEEN THROUGH TWENTY AND ATTEMPTS TO DETERMINE ITS EFFECTS ON REHABILITATION.
Abstract
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF DATA FROM PROBATION DEPARTMENT RECORDS AND QUESTIONNAIRES COMPLETED BY PROBATION OFFICERS AND CLIENTS WAS EMPLOYED. THE SAMPLE OF FIVE HUNDRED PROBATIONERS WAS CHOSEN IN ENGLAND IN 1964 AND 1965. THE STUDY FOUND LITTLE EVIDENCE THAT ENVIRONMENTAL TREATMENT SECURED ANY SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE LEVEL OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS IN THE LIVES OF PROBATIONERS OR THAT IT REDUCED THE LIKELIHOOD OF RECIDIVISM. FURTHER RESEARCH IS PROPOSED TO DETERMINE MORE EFFECTIVE TARGETS FOR SOCIAL WORK. NUMEROUS TABLES OF STATISTICAL CORRELATIONS ARE PROVIDED. RESEARCH METHODS AND DATA ARE PRESENTED IN APPENDIXES.
