THIS PAPER PRESENTS A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIAL-STRUCTURAL SOURCES OF POPULAR DIVISION ON THE LAW AND ORDER ISSUE IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN SOCIETY.
Abstract
A MAJOR FINDING IS THE GULF BETWEEN THE RACES. THE ELDERLY, FARMERS, THE LESSER EDUCATED, REPUBLICANS, WHITE SOUTHERNERS, AND FUNDAMENTALIST PROTESTANTS TEND TO BE 'HARD-LINERS'. SURPRISINGLY, THE WIDELY ACCEPTED NOTION THAT WORKING-CLASS WHITES ARE 'HARDEST' ON THE ISSUE IS CONTRADICTED. MULTIPLE DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS IS UTILIZED TO EVALUATE THE IMPORTANCE OF LAW AND ORDER AS A CAMPAIGN ISSUE FROM 1968 TO 1972.
