AN ANALYSIS OF FRIENDSHIP PATTERNS AMONG 60 INMATE ADDICTS SENTENCED TO A DRUG REHABILITATION PROGRAM IN A FEDERAL PENITENTIARY, UNDERTAKEN TO DETERMINE THE SOURCE AND EFFECT OF THESE RELATIONS ON POST-RELEASE ADJUSTMENT.
Abstract
SOCIOMETRIC DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM THE INMATE-ADDICTS BY MEANS OF A VOLUNTARY QUESTIONNAIRE. TWO IMPORTANT FEATURES OF INMATE FRIENDSHIPS WERE DISCOVERED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF DATA. IT WAS FOUND THAT MOST OF THE FRIENDSHIPS WERE NOT INDIGENOUS TO THE INSTITUTION BUT INSTEAD WERE DEVELOPED PRIOR TO CONFINEMENT AND THAT, SECOND, THESE FRIENDSHIPS BECAME THE BASIS FOR CONTRACTUAL ARRANGEMENTS WHICH ENABLED THE INMATES TO COPE WITH THE THERAPEUTIC STRESSES IMPOSED ON THEM.
