UTILIZING A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF URBAN DATA, THIS PAPER SETS OUT TO PROVIDE A TENTATIVE SPATIAL EXPLANATION OF METROPOLITAN CRIME VARIATIONS.
Abstract
THE FINDINGS CONFIRM AND SUPPLEMENT PREVIOUS ASPATIAL RESEARCH IN CRIMINOLOGY, WHILE ADDING NEW INDEPENDENT VARIABLES AND PRESENTING A TENTATIVE QUADRIPARTITE TYPOLOGY OF STANDARD METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREAS'S BASED ON RATES OF SERIOUS CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY AND THE PERSON. STEPWISE REGRESSION ANALYSIS, UTILIZING ORTHOGONAL INPUT VARIABLES, REVEALS THE IMPORTANCE OF A MINORITY FACTOR, OF YOUTHFUL POPULATION, AND OF SIZE OF METROPOLIS, IN THE EXPLANATION OF VARIATIONS IN CRIME RATES.
