Various strategies have been implemented to limit or prevent drug trafficking; because efforts focused on reducing the supply of drugs have not been very effective, there has been a recent shift to demand reduction strategies.
Abstract
Most drug control strategies are based on the law enforcement approach. Alternative strategies and perspectives may be more effective, particularly strategies based on principles of epidemiology and social network analysis. More research and better data are needed to delineate the relationship between drug availability and drug use so that appropriate prevention activities can be designed and implemented. The nature and extent of drug trafficking and the international flow of drugs are discussed. 94 references and 4 tables
