Abstract
The Economic and Social Council, in resolution 1987/53 recognized the pivotal role of the United Nations in promoting the exchange of information, experience, and expertise and closer regional and international cooperation in developing effective strategies in the areas of crime prevention and criminal justice. The Council also considered proposals for specific action to be taken by the United Nations in performing that role. In this report, the Secretary-General provides an overview of the initial steps taken to implement the resolution including preparations for the Eighth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. Areas addressed include research and policy development, technical cooperation projects, funding strategies and resource constraints. The report also includes a discussion of activities being carried out at the regional, interregional and international levels.
