REPORT ON A STUDY WHICH ANALYZED TRENDS IN THE RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION OF BRITISH MAGISTRATES, BASED ON A ONE-IN-FIVE NATIONAL SAMPLE OF THOSE APPOINTED BETWEEN JULY 1971 AND JUNE 1972.
Abstract
THE AGE, SEX, AND OCCUPATION OF APPOINTEES DURING THIS PERIOD WERE COMPARED TO THOSE OF MAGISTRATES SELECTED IN THE POST-WORLD WAR TWO YEARS. IT WAS FOUND THAT A GREATER PERCENT OF MAGISTRATES IN THE 1971-72 PERIOD WERE WOMEN AND THAT THE AVERAGE AGE OF MAGISTRATES HAD DECREASED. ALTHOUGH THERE HAD BEEN SOME CHANGES IN THE OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND OF THE MAGISTRACY, REPRESENTATION OF PROFESSIONAL AND HIGHER MANAGERIAL GROUPS WAS STILL PREDOMINANT.
